Dharma in Action
Wednesday mornings 10:00AM-12:00PM
May 10-June 28
New York Insight Meditation Center
28 West 27th St.

Everyday life is uncertain enough, but in these times of societal and environmental instability the challenges seem far greater. At times we may feel hopeless and we might find ourselves always saying “what can I do”.  The Buddha’s teachings offers a clear path to navigate life individually and societally through the 10,000 joys and sorrows.  In these eight weekly classes we will explore through practice how appropriate response can arise.

Each class will include a period of meditation, a short dharma talk, sutta study and dialogue.  There will also be weekly on-going practices and readings.

Pre-requisites:  Insight 101, MBSR.  If you have questions about whether this class is appropriate please ask to contact me.

Five Night Silent Retreat-- Coming Home to Kindness

  • Copper Beech Institute

Co-taught with Beth Mulligan and and Co-Sponsored by the Center for Mindful Self-Compassion.

A silent retreat is a vital way to nourish our personal meditation practice. It is life-enhancing for everyone who attends and particularly important for those who work with mindfulness-based interventions. This retreat will be based on the life-changing and well-researched work of Christopher Germer and Kristin Neff, creators of the Mindful Self Compassion Program, as well as ancient wisdom practice from several traditions. This is an opportunity to renew and deepen your practice of compassion and mindfulness meditation, and live fully in a strong, supportive, and beautiful environment enhanced by silence with the support of experienced teachers. Our attention during this retreat will be on how we can build our resilience and enhance our capacity to meet challenges with equanimity, strength, and compassionate awareness.

You Are Not Your Pain

Tuesday Mornings
9:30pm-12:00PM
June 6-August 1 (No class July 4)
New York Insight Meditation Center
28 West 27th St. 10th Floor

This 8-Week class is geared toward those who deal with persistent pain, illness or other conditions affecting one’s physical health.

The curriculum was originally developed by Vidyamala Burch, founder of Breathworks in England.  While it is in some ways  similar to the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction class developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn it is much more specifically teaching how the power of mindfulness addresses chronic physical pain and illness.  Participants will learn how to manage their pain in daily life, breath and body awareness practices, gentle mindful movement,  and numerous meditation practices to cultivate a greater sense of kindness toward self and others.

Participants will receive a class workbook, a copy of Vidyamala Burch’s book, You are Not Your Pain, and meditation recordings via MP3.

Because of the nature of the class, registration is limited to 10 participants.  Upon registration you will be requested to fill out an application and then have an interview with Jon Aaron to determine if the class is appropriate for you.

Registration Fee: $500.00, Limited scholarships available.

Anyone who has explored any aspect of the early Buddhist teachings is aware of the fact that the teachings incorporate a great many lists.  This of course was a valuable technique in pre-literate times but can be at times confusing for our 21st century brains. The purpose of this course, is not the lists themselves, but the categories of experience that they point to.  How do we fully integrate these teachings—whether it be the Five Hindrances, or the Seven Awakening Factors, or the Eightfold Path—into our daily lives?
