A class for beginning meditators and those curious about the Buddhist approach to meditation
Six Wednesday Mornings
10:00AM-Noon

This course will provide fundamental instruction in insight meditation. Emphasis is placed on the practices of sitting and walking meditation and developing mindfulness in daily life. Explanation and discussion of the Buddhist teachings central to insight meditation are part of each class. The course is appropriate for beginners as well as experienced meditators who wish to maintain their “beginner’s mind.”

The teachings of the Buddha have an experiential emphasis. It is not a question of believing that practicing meditation is beneficial, but of actually trying it out and experiencing the results for oneself. Insight meditation is a way to develop wisdom and compassion. The core of the practice is the cultivation of mindfulness. In the past few years, there has been a great increase in the study of mindfulness and its benefits. This class is appropriate to all with an interest in meditation and everyone is welcome.

How Mindfulness Leads to Insight-- a day-long retreat

What is the relationship between mindfulness (Sati) and Insight (Vipassana)? In this day of practice, we will explore the factors of mindfulness and the practice of investigation and how these efforts lead to both insight and tranquility.

What are we talking about when we speak of insights in the meditative context? A strong key is found in the Seven Factors of Awakening which starts with Mindfulness. The teaching on the Seven Factors is a key to our own individual awakening and consequently the awakening of the society we are part of.

In this Daylong, we will explore the concept of meditation, how it leads to insight and what concepts support us in our meditation practice. This program is open to meditators of all levels.

Mindfulness, Compassionate Action, and the Wisdom of Emptiness.

How does meditation practice inform our engagement with the world today?    As we walk the path between the absolute and ultimate reality do we allow appropriate response to arise when confronted with the challenges we face today?  The ideal of the Bodhisattava—implicit in the early Buddhist teachings and explicit in the later teachings—is compassion in action.   Compassionate action arises in the space of emptiness when we let go of the clinging to self.  This class will explore the Bodhisattva ideal –its place in the early teachings and some of the primary texts of later teachings.  Most important however we will explore how compassionate action arises in us, when is it blocked, and how we bring our practice and wisdom into the world.

The theme for this retreat is Finding the Stillness Within. What happens when we drop our digital devices, cut down our sensory input and come to silence?  This is what we discover on retreat.   Thoughts and unhelpful emotional states that clutter the mind and are the result of our daily life start to clear away like clouds, and the stillness which is our natural state becomes our place of refuge.  In this still place of refuge, wisdom and compassion can naturally arise.   This mindfulness meditation weekend retreat will alternate between guided sitting meditations and various mindful movement practices with evening talks and individual teacher meetings. It is wonderful opportunity for those with limited meditation experience who have not experienced a silent retreat.

This 8-Week class is geared toward those who deal with persistent pain, illness or other conditions affecting one’s physical health. The curriculum was originally developed by Vidyamala Burch, founder of Breathworks in England. While it is in some ways similar to the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction class developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn it is much more specifically teaching how the power of mindfulness addresses chronic physical pain and illness. Participants will learn how to manage their pain in daily life, breath and body awareness practices, gentle mindful movement, and numerous meditation practices to cultivate a greater sense of kindness toward self and others.

Participants will receive a class workbook, and meditation recordings via MP3.

Because of the nature of the class, registration is limited to 12 participants. Upon registration you will be requested to fill out an application and then have an interview with Jon Aaron to determine if the class is appropriate for you.

The teachings on Emptiness (Sunyata) can come across as some great mystical experience or as a “thing” to be obtained.  While it may seem confusing at first, these teachings have the potential to open us to the experience and embodied wisdom of Anatta (not-self).   There are many books on the topic (some of which will be used in this class) and you have likely heard the term used often in talks.   This class will be an opportunity to explore how, as we start to live from the place of Emptiness, true freedom is experienced.

Our life unfolds like music from an orchestra. We respond or react depending on the tonality in any given moment. Over time, we gain a fixed interpretation of this music, and expect it to continue to unfold in a similar way according to our tastes and preferences. We are thrown off base when a discordant note arrives. Through practice, though, we learn to improvise and begin to realize that riffing off the discordant can create beauty.

This is an opportunity to renew and deepen your practice of compassion and mindfulness meditation, and live fully in a strong, supportive, and beautiful environment enhanced by silence with the support of experienced teachers.

Much of our time will be spent engaged in sitting and walking meditation with periods of mindful movement. The teachers will provide meditation instruction and guidance along with daily talks.

One of the powers of mindfulness is that it brings greater awareness of long-held resentments toward ourselves and others. This can become an obstacle to our practice and it is essential that we face resentments and the inner-critic with a heart of forgiveness and compassion. These four sessions for MBSR alumni will give participants an opportunity to check-in and to integrate the seeds of forgiveness and compassion into our daily practice.

The Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge—part of Gateway National Recreation Area—is one of the most significant bird sanctuaries in the Northeastern United States and one of the best places in New York City to observe migrating species. With more than 330 bird species—nearly half the species in the Northeast—sighted at the refuge over the last 25 years.

This will be the part of a monthly series of nature meditation offerings from March to September, 2017. No prior meditation experience required.
